We’ve all had that moment where a combo requires a développé, and suddenly your leg doesn’t seem to go further than 90 degrees. Good extensions don’t just come naturally. They are something that you build up and develop over time.
Secret #1: It is More About Strength Than Flexibility
We usually associate stretching with flexibility, but an extension is about more than being bendy. Flexibility allows you to move your leg up, but you need strength to keep it there. An extension isn’t just about how far you can extend your leg, it is also about how well you can control bringing it up and down. Focus on hip flexor exercises, core strengthening, and glute activation. Strong dancers have controlled movements.
Secret #2: Your Core is EVERYTHING
You could be the most flexible dancer in the world, but if you don’t engage your cor,e then you are going to struggle to hold a strong extension. Before you lift your leg, engage the muscles in your core, pulling up towards the ceiling, and keep your ribs closed. Think about lifting from your center and not just your leg. Strong extensions start with a strong base.
Secret #3: Stop Forcing It
It can be easy to see someone who is flexible and think you need to be like them right away. However, you never want to force flexibilty. Doing so leads to muscle strains, injuries, or just slowing down your progress. Becoming flexible is a process that takes time. Make sure you warm up first, take deep breaths, and focus on the alignment of your body. Consistency will always get you further than intensity.
Secret #4: Clean Over High
This might be hard to hear. We all want the highest extension, but clean and pretty extensions are better than messy high extensions. Prioritize a proper turnout and straight supporting knee. No leaning! This might be more difficult, but it is going to pay off.
