6 High Fashion Trends We Want to Turn Into Unique Dance Costumes

Runway and streetwear trends might trickle down to your school wardrobe, but outside of color trends, they rarely make it to the dance floor.

There are a lot of reasons for this. Many trends are not danceable. Either they are too clunky or fitted to allow for movement, or they obscure the dancer’s silhouette too much for technique to show through. It’s no wonder the classic leotard has so many variations!

Lucky for us, this season’s fashion trends are full of danceable moments that we would love to see on stage. We’re looking for movement and shape, but we’re also after unique color combinations, new accessories, and anything we think might add a little flair to a look and complement gorgeous choreography.

Balloon Pants

Controversial? Maybe! Balloon pants are coming back alongside palazzo pants and knee-length skirts in a way we can’t help but pay attention to. Unlike barrel jeans, balloon pants are light and airy, making them movable. This means you can stretch, jump, and most importantly, show off in them. While the obvious choice might be to add balloon pants to the look for your next hip hop routine, we could also see these as an artful addition to a jazz or lyrical piece with the right choreography.

The Stripes and Lace Combo

We started off bold, but this trend is a lot more versatile. Stripes and lace are all about visual texture. You can add whatever colors you want and bring in any silhouette. The star of the look is going to be how the patterns in the lace and the directions and width of your stripes interact. Think of the movement possibilities!

Yellow and Pink

An All-New Tenniscore

Truly, this has nothing to do with tennis. While tenniscore’s first appearance really seemed to only make sense on the court, the latest update to this trend is more in line with that relaxed luxury feeling. Swap the polo shirt for a vest. Leave the skirt out of the equation and replace it with briefs. The decisions you make here leave space for character building via costume.

Hair Bobbles

The bobby pins are already there. Why not put them to good use? We love a classic dance hairstyle, but if we have room to explore, why not go all the way with the sparkles? Adding pearls and chunky rhinestones can add a new element to your dance costume without you having to worry about adding a prop, a complicated skirt, or a hat that will either fly off or be part of your head forever.

Artful Draping

Hip scarves, lace camis, and fairy skirts are more alive than ever, and we think this is the perfect time to use that fashion momentum for fabulous dance costumes. Contemporary and lyrical costumes love asymmetrical skirts that show off technical lines. Using these artfully draped styles could help you give your costume a modern, eye-catching look.
