Summer always seems to fly by! Suddenly, you’re staring at a brand-new school year. How did you get here? What do you do now?
Whether you’re starting at a new school, heading into another year with your friends, or just trying to get back into the swing of things, going back to school can bring a mix of excitement and nerves. A new school year is a fresh start. It’s a chance to reset your routines, meet new people, set new goals, and become a little more confident in who you are.
You Don’t Have to Have Everything Figured Out
It’s easy to feel like everyone else has their entire life ready and planned before the new school year. They already know who their best friends will be, what activities to join, and exactly what they want to accomplish. You don’t have to know all of that yet. Give yourself permission to figure things out as you go. Some of the best friendships, hobbies, and experiences happen when you aren’t trying to plan them all out.
Give Yourself a Fresh Start
A new school year doesn’t need to just pick up where the last one left off. Maybe last year didn’t go exactly how you wanted. Maybe you were shy about speaking up, struggled with time management (the classic “procrastination problem”), or stayed in your comfort zone more than you would’ve liked. You can leave those things in the past. Decide what you want to do differently this year and give yourself the opportunity to start fresh. That is the best part about starting a brand new year!
Get Organized Before You Need to Be
One of the easiest ways to make school feel less overwhelming is to get organized before everything gets busy. Clean out your backpack, organize your desk, look over your class schedule, and figure out where you’ll keep important assignments and notes. Even little things like setting up your planner or calendar can make the first few weeks feel much smoother. If you have dance on top of school, planning becomes even more important. Write down rehearsals, competitions, practices, tests, and other commitments so you can see everything in one place.
Make a Few Goals That Actually Matter to You
Instead of making a giant list of things you think you’re supposed to accomplish, choose a few goals that genuinely excite you. Maybe you want to start a new club, audition for something new, make more friends, become more confident speaking in class, or finally try a new dance style. Your goals don’t have to impress anyone else. They’re yours. Choose whatever makes you happy!
Don’t Be Afraid to Talk to New People
Walking into a classroom and starting a conversation with someone you don’t know can feel awkward, but remember that they might be nervous too. Say hi to the person sitting next to you. Compliment someone’s outfit. Ask someone about a class or activity. You don’t need to instantly become best friends—sometimes a simple conversation is all it takes to start a new friendship.
A new school year is a blank page. You don’t have to know exactly what the story will be yet. Just start on day one.
