Teen superstar Billie Eilish is the latest artist to drop music from quarantine. Her new single, “my future,” is softer than many of Billie’s most well-known tracks. NPR even describes the song as “ASMR Billie.”
The instrumental backdrop for Billie’s voice is atmospheric with a quiet piano backdrop we haven’t really heard since “listen before i go” from her WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? album. That accompanied by the vocal range she let loose in “No Time to Die,” the title track for the latest James Bond film and the magical animated world that a cartoon Billie walks through in the music video make this a quiet, introspective track.
“I’m not here. I’m just a mirror,” Billie sings in the lead up to the reveal that she’s in love with her future self. “I can’t wait to meet her,” she sings about this future self that she’s focusing on. “my future” brings an uplifting turn since her previous single, “everything i wanted,” which showed a Billie stifled by her fame and success.
In an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Billie and her brother Finneas shared that the single came together quickly “This was such a satisfying process. It was so, so satisfying. We wrote the song in like two days,” she said. She also revealed that, unlike, her previous projects, it didn’t take as long for her to record something she was satisfied with. A particular artist, Billie is known for recording minute parts of her songs over and over until she gets the perfect sound. The iconic “Duh” in “bad guy” took thirty-four takes.
