Dakota Casteel is a 10-year-old dancer from Tennessee. She dances at Spotlite Dance Studio.

“[because of dance] I am more successful at school because I have learned what it takes to achieve greatness and that if you do fail, keep working hard to achieve what you want.”

Tell us about your dance experience!

I started competing at the age of 4 in a group dance at my home studio. I took the stage for the first time at Showstopper. I have been competing ever since, regionally and nationally. I train six days a week in all genres of dance. For the past few years, I furthered my training at dance conventions locally and out of state in order to surround myself with eager and inspirational dancers and teachers that I can learn even more from.

How does dance have a positive impact on your life?

My mother owns the studio I dance at, so everything about dance consumes our lives. My best friends dance at the studio, my mom’s best friends teach me daily, and my family helps run the business. It is my home. It is everything I have ever known and my safe place. It has taught me discipline, respect, and a strong work ethic. I am more successful at school because I have learned what it takes to achieve greatness and that if you do fail, keep working hard to achieve what you want. I am capable of anything if I am determined. I have proven that to myself.

How do you want to use dance to have a positive impact on your community?

Dance touches so many lives in ways that we don’t even realize. Whether it be a fundraiser for our community, performing to an audience for entertainment and inspiration, and/or health benefits. It also helps communities of dancers if even from different studios, come together and express their love of the art through a different way of communication.
