“…I know that no matter how hard a challenge may seem, as long as I practice and never give up, I will succeed in anything I do.”

How does dance have a positive impact on your life?

Dance has been a part of my life since the day I was born. I started taking classes when I was two years old, and I knew I had found what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. It has been a way for me to express myself when I can’t find the words to say. It has given me confidence to try new things. If my dance teacher gave me a new step or trick to learn, I never got it the first time. It was actually a challenge, but I was determined to get it. I kept practicing until I got it; then I kept practicing so that I would never forget it. Because of dance, I know that no matter how hard a challenge may seem, as long as I practice and never give up, I will succeed in anything I do.

How do you want to use dance to have a positive influence on your community?

I have a passion for teaching dance and choreographing for other dancers. I want to open my own studio someday, but more than anything, I want to be a role model for dancers who may not look how some people think a dancer should look like. I used to be uncomfortable in dance classes because I wasn’t as small as my dance friends. It was my dance teachers who helped build my confidence as a dancer by giving me the opportunity to assist with the younger dancers. I had to be confident then because I had younger dancers following me and wanting to be like me. I want to be a dancer who not only dances but inspires others to follow their dreams no matter who they are or what they look like.
