Have you ever opened your Instagram and thought, “Wait…when did my account stop feeling like me?”Social media is supposed to be fun and your own personal creative outlet. Between trends, curated feeds, aesthetic accounts, and constantly seeing what everyone else is posting, it can be surprisingly easy to start creating content based on what you think you should post instead of what you actually like.
Go Back Through Your Old Posts
Before changing everything, take a scroll through your old Instagram. Look at the posts you genuinely loved making. What did you like about them? Maybe they were silly, colorful, spontaneous, or simply captured a really good memory. How you felt creating those posts should give you some new ideas for future posts.
Stop Trying to Fit Into One Aesthetic
Of course we all love a good aesthetic, but Instagram is meant to be fun! You don’t have to choose one color palette, one editing style, or one personality for your entire account. Maybe one week you’re obsessed with colorful photos and the next you’re loving simple, candid pictures. That’s okay! Your Instagram can change because you change. It is normal for it to change with us as we grow into different stages of our lives.
Make Your Stories More You
Your Stories are one of the easiest places to experiment. Share what you’re listening to, what you’re doing after school, your current favorite outfit, a behind-the-scenes moment from dance, a funny conversation with your friends, or something that made you smile that day. Stories don’t have to be perfectly planned or even really have a deep meaning.
Share Your Real Interests
Think about the things you talk about with your friends all the time. Maybe you’re obsessed with dance, books, fashion, fitness, music, baking, photography, traveling, or finding cute coffee shops. Let those interests become part of your content! Your account should be filled with the things, people, and places that you love. It is what is going to make your account stand out from everybody else’s.
Don’t Feel Like You Have to Post Everything
Making your Instagram feel authentic doesn’t mean sharing every part of your life. You get to choose what stays private. You can have a fun, personal account while still keeping certain moments just for yourself, your friends, or your family. Being authentic doesn’t mean oversharing. It means making choices that feel right for you.
Your Instagram should feel like a little corner of the internet that belongs to you, not a version of you that you think everyone else wants to see.
