After the first delay in Oscars’ history, the 2021 Oscars nominations are here ahead of the April 25 ceremony. The wait for the nominations has made people antsy to know what films and stars would be recognized during the 93rd Oscars, but even more exciting are the changes in nominations that we hope to see reflected in the winners next month.
Across the 23 categories, 70 women are nominated for 76 awards! These nominations include the first time that two women have simultaneously been nominated for Best Director. Emerald Fennell is nominated for Promising Young Woman, and Chloé Zhao is nominated for Nomadland. Chloé is the first woman of color to be nominated for this category! Viola Davis also broke the record for most nominations of a Black actress with her Actress in a Leading Role nomination this year–Viola’s fourth nomination (a low number for a record that she points out highlights the lack of recognition for artists of color).
Chadwick Boseman also received a posthumous nomination in the Actor in a Leading Role category for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
