In his new single, “One Sided,” Canadian artist Myles Lloyd takes us into a world of harsh dualities. The song is about realizing that a relationship is not as strong as you thought. “One Sided” is about going all in for somebody who was never really all in for you,” Myles said in a statement about the song. “It’s realizing you’ve been carrying the relationship on your back while they’re just along for the ride.”
In the song itself, Myles balances these heavy feelings with a rhythmic and mesmerising lyricism. He describes emotional turmoil with a steadiness that makes his listener face the relationship with him. Alongside this, in the song’s visualizer, Myles oozes the kind of melancholy you can only feel when someone has let you down while ballerina Masha Cherezova delicately poses beside him. “I always love the contrast effect that having the ballerina added to the video,” Myles said of the visual. “There’s something about having something so graceful looking that’s in their own world while there’s me that’s screaming raw emotions out.”
As Myles bares his soul, the dancer lingers on the stairs behind him and gracefully dances on the other side of a wall. At times, she is a shadow, haunting an alley with small leaps and dainty footwork. To make this visual work, “We focused on keeping the emotion present,” Myles shared with us. “Never breaking character and staying in a visual pocket that feels perfectly misplaced.”
Now that “One Sided” is out, Myles hopes that his music travels beyond his bedroom—and he’s succeeding, with performances at Lollapalooza and Sol Blume under his belt alongside collaborations with ENHYPHEN and Pinterest. He told us that he wants his listeners to know that they’re not alone if they have weak relationships to look back on too. “I wasn’t always there. I was once lost and naive, so it’s okay if they are or were as well.”
