When most people think of summer, they picture beach days, vacations, and sleeping in. But if you’re looking for a fun (and affordable!) way to spend your free time, your local library might be one of the most underrated places to visit. They’re full of opportunities to learn something new, get creative, relax, and even meet new people. Plus, libraries need the support now more than ever, so it wouldn’t hurt to check it out!

It’s Completely Free

Summer activities can get expensive. Going out for breakfast, shopping, or seeing a movie adds up quickly. The library is one of the few places where you can spend hours without spending a single dollar. You can borrow books, magazines, audiobooks, movies, and sometimes even board games or craft kits, all for free. And who doesn’t love free things?

Discover Your Next Favorite Book

Summer is the perfect time to get lost in a good story. Whether you love romance, fantasy, mystery, biographies, or self-improvement books, there’s something for everyone. Not sure what to read? Ask a librarian! They’re amazing at recommending books based on what you already enjoy. You might just discover your new favorite author or book series. You could even bring a friend and start a book club together.

It’s the Perfect Quiet Escape

Life can get busy, especially if you’re balancing dance, work, summer classes, or family plans. Or maybe you just want a break from your little siblings to have some alone time. The library gives you a peaceful place to slow down, read, study, journal, or simply enjoy a quiet afternoon. Sometimes stepping away from the noise is exactly what your mind needs.

Find Inspiration for Your Creative Side

Libraries are full of more than novels. Browse books about photography, fashion, painting, cooking, travel, sewing, dance, or graphic design. You never know what new hobby or creative project might catch your eye. As dancers, inspiration can come from anywhere, even a book you picked up by chance. Many libraries even lend out tools for many of these hobbies that you can use to expand your skills. Don’t invest in a sewing machine yet. Borrow one from your library and take on the challenge of learning first.

Give Your Brain a Break From Screens

Most of us spend a lot of time looking at our phones, especially during the summer. Reading a physical book or flipping through a magazine gives your eyes—and your mind—a chance to recharge. Lots of screen time can make you feel more tired, less focused, and easily distracted.

Borrow Instead of Buying

We’ve all bought books because they looked interesting…only for them to sit unread on a shelf. The library lets you explore different genres and authors without spending money. If you don’t end up loving a book, you can simply return it and try another one. It’s an easy way to discover what you actually enjoy reading without breaking the bank.

Your local library is so much more than a place to borrow books. It’s a space to learn, create, relax, and discover new interests—all without spending a fortune. Whether you’re looking for your next favorite novel, a quiet place to recharge, or a fun way to spend an afternoon, your library has something waiting for you.
