Dance teaches more valuable lessons than just how to do leaps and turns. It can teach you lifelong lessons that you can take with you your entire life. I’ve learned a lot from when I started dancing as a kind in the studio to now dancing in college. Here are ten lessons dance taught me about life!

1. Trust the Process

Do you ever get frustrated with dance and want to give up, only to then achieve what you were struggling with? This is the perfect example of trusting the process which can apply to learning a new skill in dance or working hard in college to get your dream job. Sometimes all it takes is showing up, trying your best, and being consistent.

2. Confidence is Key

Whether it’s performing in front of an audience, or going for an interview, confidence is the best thing you can have. How you present yourself is so important, and confidence is a huge part of that.

3. It’s all About Balance

From going on relevè to balancing a packed schedule. It will make your life so much easier to learn as fast as possible how to schedule in a way that works for you. That way, you can manage everything and not miss due dates, opportunities, and everything else life has to offer.

4. It’s Okay to Struggle

Everyone struggles at some point. Whether you’re trying to find the beat or just getting a task done, we all face challenges and hurdles. It is completely normal and not something to be ashamed of. In fact, it is healthy to talk to someone about it.

5. Communication is a Must

Speaking of talking to people, when you are struggling, communication will prevent mistakes and issues. Having good communication skills with your teachers and friends will allow you to have helpful conversations that make sure everyone is on the same page.

6. You can Learn a Lot by Watching Others

Jess Cranney

Have you ever sat in class and watched someone else do a new move you haven’t seen before then you wanted to try it? Well, life is also like that! You’d be surprised at how much you can learn just by observing others. You can learn new skills, habits, information, and more.

7. What is Meant for You Won’t Pass You

That lead role that you really wanted or that concert ticket you were hoping to win, if it was meant for you it will happen. So don’t worry if you didn’t get something you wanted, a bigger and better opportunity that is meant for you is coming.

8. Your Attitude Matters

And no, I don’t just mean the dance term, I mean how you approach situations. It can be easy to look at things negatively when they aren’t working in your favor, but how you respond to those situations is what truly matters.

9. Bad Days Happen

…but so do good days. Just like how you might have a bad turning day, you might have a day where nothing seems to go right. And that’s okay, everyone has them. A day is only 24 hours, it will end, and tomorrow will be a fresh start.

10. Memories will Take You Far

Remembering things from people’s names, to a combo, to a due date is what will really make YOU remembered. People feel valued and seen when they are remembered, so you instantly make a good impression.

Life skills can be learned from anything, anyone or any sport. Dance brings plenty of lessons that will help you navigate the dance world as well as life outside of dance.
