Alexis Miller is a 12-year-old dancer from California. She dances at Profusion Talent.

“I want to be what dancers in my community need to feel supported and to feel that they matter not only for what their bodies can do, but for who they are as people.”

Tell us about your dance experience!

I have been dancing since I was 4 and competing since I was 8. I have traveled all over California to compete but would love to compete or do something big in other states as well. I love dancing all types of genres, but my favorites are lyrical, contemporary, and musical theatre. My team and I have competed together for a long time. They are my family, and I am so glad I get to do the thing I love most with them.

How does dance have a positive impact on your life?

When I dance, I step outside of myself. I love that I can leave all my problems at the door and just be me on the dance floor. It has allowed me to try new things, meet new people, step out of my comfort zone, and to really learn what it means to be supportive of someone other than yourself.

How do you want to use dance to have a positive impact on your community?

I would absolutely love to use dance to make a positive impact anywhere inside or outside of my community by expressing not only my own, but other people’s stories with my movement, by supporting my fellow dancers, and by being the someone that a dancer may need to make it through an event, a dance, or even just a moment. I want to be what dancers in my community need to feel supported and to feel that they matter not only for what their bodies can do but for who they are as people. Dancers are people, too, and that needs to be recognized to keep this art form important to everyone.
