Theater kids, jump out of your seats! Daydreaming about dancing under the stage lights all day, performing in music ensembles, and being in an opening number are all magical options in the world of musicals. Musical theater is about being part of something bigger than yourself.
Your passion is already unlocked, but finding your start takes more strategy. (No, the strategy isn’t just training in the best studio or university in the world.)
The Dance Advantage
As a dancer, you already have the upper hand in the world of musicals. You have training in rhythm, musicality, and timing, and you know how to captivate an audience. These skills play a huge role in musical theatre. It can be difficult for performers who struggle with stage fright to bring characters to life, but as a dancer, you already have the advantage of knowing how to own the stage andhow to share it. You know how to apply corrections, pace yourself through long studio days, and have self-discipline. You have a foundation, now you just have to build on it.
Triple Threat Training
Musical theater and Broadway performers are often called “Triple Threats” because they can really do it all. Knowing how to sing, act, and dance expands your opportunities. This can feel scary if your strengths only lie in dance right now.
The good news is that you don’t have to be a professional yet. Start taking some vocal lessons and learn how to hold a tune and what pitch is. Start acting. Even if it feels awkward at first, keep trying. Everyone starts as a beginner, so let yourself try and fail! Your ultimate goal is to slip in and out of stories with ease, using all three of these skills. Aim for balance.
Musical Theatre Dance Classes
Your versatility in dance is a strength, but not all dance styles are equally used in musical theater. Taking musical theater dance classes will help you build up skills in production-based performances. Classes in tap, jazz, ballet, and contemporary are excellent for building essential skills that translate to more blended styles on stage. Study the musicals that you admire and the styles they use to decide which classes are the best fit for helping you achieve your dreams.
Auditioning (Even if You Don’t Feel Ready)
You are never going to feel totally “ready.” That’s why you just have to start! Audition for school plays, local theater productions, or even record reels and submit online auditions. Every audition will teach you something and help you practice for the future when your skills are more developed. Don’t worry about rejection! Rejection is normal in theatre. It is not a reflection of your talent or potential.
