The MTV VMAs 2022 are a night of music and performances, but we’d be lying if we said we weren’t just as obsessed with the red carpet looks as this year’s hit songs. Stars walked the extravagant black carpet at the VMAs in Newark, New Jersey in some truly showstopping outfits.

An exciting day for music and creation, the MTV VMAs brought us exciting red carpet styles, grand stage performances, and celebrations of music, fashion, dance, production, and film. So many artistic moments in history have happened at the VMAs! Fans voted online for their favorite artists in 21 gender-neutral categories including Video of the Year, Best Collaboration, Artist of the Year, Song of the Summer, and Best New Artist as well as non-voted “Professional Categories” including Best Cinematography, Best Direction, Best Editing, and even Best Choreography!

Fun Fact: Did you know that the very first MTV VMAs took place in 1984 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City?

This year marked the 38th annual MTV VMAs, and the fashion was wild. With a dress code that is simple “party wear,” options for VMAs looks are pretty limitless. This leaves stars and world-renowned designers room to collaborate on exciting and eye-catching looks we might not see otherwise. (Turns out the “Best Collaborations” at the VMAs aren’t only done on stage!)

With so many stars, it can be hard to choose favorites, but these were truly some standout looks.

Taylor Swift

A mesmerizing star, Taylor Swift truly made herself queen of the night. Making history as a VMA-winning solo director, three-time Video of the Year winner, and breaking records as “All Too Well” (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version) became the longest video to ever win the coveted Moon Person for Video of the Year, Taylor was sparkling on Sunday. This icon arrived in an Oscar de la Renta silver minidress with intricate layered beading and unique jewels. Her makeup was an effortless glam look featuring silver glitter eyeliner, low-key blush, and her signature red lip.

Oh, and she closed out the night with a bombshell announcement. Her new tenth studio album, Midnights, will be out October 21!

Sabrina Carpenter

Ok, flower power! Sabrina Carpenter rocked the VMAs red carpet in sequined Moschino. This look was so groovy! Sabrina’s floor-length designer gown was highlighted with colorful rainbow floral embroidery. Sabrina brings style to the max in a high fashion style. She completed the glamorous beaded look with a black headband, glittering earrings, and sparkling highlights! Beauty!

Chloe Flower

This is the perfect polka dot fashion moment! Classical musician Chloe Flower wore a beautiful designer Celine dress with cascading puff, bow-like sleeves and white polka dots to the VMAs. From her matching white saying platform heels to matching black headpiece, the whole look was, in a word, gorgeous.

Fun Fact: Chloe studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London. How cool! Awe-inspiring and stylish.

Sofia Carson

This actress, musician, dancer, songwriter, producer (the list goes on!) , and talented queen always beings grace and elegance to her stylish looks. At the 2022 VMAs, Sofia wore a designer dress by Caroline Herrera. The red-carpet fashion look was sophisticated and edgy, starring a flowing veil moment and timeless low bun. Sofia’s glam makeup was totally gorgeous as well, fierce winged liner and gloss.

Lizzo

As if she isn’t always, the moment, THIS is fashion drama. Lizzo made a statement with a marvelous Jeal Paul Gaultier Couture Spring/Summer 2022 dress. Along the gown, layers of gathered fabric flowed in a light-reflective midnight blue color. Lizzo completed the look with intricate silver earrings, sheer blue gloves, and a fabulous lipstick color-matched to her look. The gown was followed by two more looks for her stage performance and awards acceptance. This icon is a trend-setter!
