If you have spent any time online recently, then you know that thrifting is so in. But for dancers, it is so underrated. Buying brand-new dance clothes can become a major financial stress. From outfits for conventions to everyday practices, dancers need multiple outfit options for different dance styles. This is where thrifting comes in, and it’s easier than you think. Thrifting is a fun hobby and a great way to find unique pieces to wear to class.
Fitted Tanks, Baby Tees & Cropped Tops
These are staple pieces for every dancer’s closet. When thrifting, a good thing to keep an eye out for is anything fitted and easy to move in. Baby tees, ribbed tanks and bras, or cropped t-shirts are all great options. They are comfortable and stylish while still allowing your lines to be seen when dancing.
Thrift Tip: Even if something looks too basic or boring while in the store, it is all about how you style it. Never trust how anything looks on the hanger! Once you tie your unique style into it, you’ll have a new, cute outfit for class!
Soft, Stretchy Shorts & Dance-Friendly Bottoms
Having something that you can turn, kick, and flip in is a priority. Be on the lookout for athletic-style shorts or anything that has some stretch to it. Waistbands matter too, but those decisions are more about personal preference. High-waisted pieces tend to feel more comfortable and give you more coverage, while low-waisted pieces are more “trendy” and less full-coverage.
Thrift Tip: Check the pajama section of your thrift store. You can find some gems there. Sometimes, workout wear makes its way to the wrong section.
Oversized Hoodies & Crewnecks
Every dancer knows the comfort that comes with dancing in the perfect oversized hoodie. Thrift stores are the perfect place to find these! These are perfect to throw on for warming up, comfort between classes, and when you just want to feel cozy.
Thrift Tip: Make sure to check the men’s section for thicker materials, vintage brands, and more oversized pieces.
Sweatpants & Warm-Ups
Warm-ups are a basic necessity. The feeling of slightly worn sweatpants is unmatched, and what better place to find them than at the thrift store? Search for joggers, baggy sweats, or even old-school athletic pants. These will give that cozy dancer vibe while keeping you warm in between or before classes.
Thrift Tip: Always double-check the waist and length of sweatpants, so you know they’ll work for your body and how you plan to wear them, especially if you like to roll the cuffs or waistband.
