Every dancer knows the magic of dance goes way beyond the moves. From nailing a new turn to performing under the lights, dance gives us so many unforgettable moments. But what really brings it all together is the team spirit that turns dancers into family.
When dancers support each other, you feel it in every performance! A strong sense of team spirit makes practices more fun, shows less stressful, and friendships even deeper. Here’s what it takes to build team spirit that’s as strong as your fouettés and as supportive as a steady partner lift!
Create Traditions
Team traditions are a great way to bond. Think about special things you can do together before each performance—like a unique cheer, a quick huddle, or even a “seret handshake.” These small rituals can bring everyone together, creating excitement and focus.
TRY THIS! Create a team playlist and ask everyone to add their favorite pump-up song. Listen to it before practice or competitions. It’ll get you in sync both on and off the dance floor!
Encourage Each Other
Building team spirit is all about lifting each other up. Whether someone nails a tricky move, gets a compliment from a coach, or has a rough day, showing support makes a difference
TRY THIS! Start a “Compliment Jar.” Any time someone sees a teammate doing something awesome, write it down and add it to the jar. At the end of the week, read them out loud! Want to keep it more low-key? Write someone an encouraging note and stick it in their cubby.
Build Trust
Dance is about trusting your team—whether it’s during lifts, formations, or challenging eight counts. Team-building games and activities like group stretches and trust falls help everyone feel closer and more comfortable.
TRY THIS! Play “Dance Telephone.” One person creates a short combo, and each dance in line copies it after just watching it once. It’s fun to see how it changes and a great way to practice observing and copying movements!
Celebrate Every Win
While competition wins are amazing, it’s equally important to celebrate small victories along the way. Did someone master that leap they’ve been struggling with? Celebrate it! Every step forward counts.
Make Time For Fun
Practices are important, but so is hanging out and having fun outside them! Organize a team outing—a movie night, picnic, or even a team sleepover. Spending time together outside the studio helps you get to know each other beyond dance, creating friendships that make your team even stronger.
TRY THIS! Plan a “Dance Costume Swap Day” where everyone brings an old costume or leo to swap and try on for fun. It’s a great way to bond, laugh, and maybe even find inspiration for your next performance look!
When a team truly connects, that spirit shines through in every step, turn, and jump onstage. Building team spirit isn’t just about performing together; it’s about the bond you share as dancers and friends. So next time you step onto the stage, know that you’re not just dancing for yourself—you’re dancing for your team. Now go out there, support each other, and let your team spirit shine!
