For new choreography and improv, it’s fun to build a list of go-to artists you can count on for the right rhythm and mood for your favorite dance styles. The energy and performance styles of today’s top artists make it easy to categorize their stage persona and hit songs.

Olivia Rodrigo

At first, you might label Olivia Rodrigo as contemporary due to her unique style and voice. However, we feel she is giving more of a hip-hop vibe. Her angsty lyrics that every teen girl can relate to, edgy style, and energetic screams give the high energy needed for hip-hop. Think about the hair flips, crazy floor work, and sharp footwork that match the energy in “get him back!” and “good 4 u.”

Taylor Swift

The storytelling present in Taylor Swift’s lyrics is just unmatched. The raw and emotional quality of her recent work provides a backdrop for heart-wrenching performances. There is a feeling of nostalgia and bittersweet emotions in every song. We’re getting lyrical vibes from Taylor. Picture a solo in a long flowy costume, and the emotions flowing through every movement in your body.

Beyoncé

Beyoncé’s hard-hitting lyrics and beats give dancers space to be powerful and bold performers. They make you feel powerful and like you are on top of the world. She is strong and precise, bringing energy in a controlled yet expressive way. For these reasons, Beyoncé is the queen of jazz funk. From “Single Ladies” to “Formation” her movements each have their own place and are all sharp and clean. Dancing to Beyoncé just makes you feel unstoppable and like you can achieve anything that you want (because you can).

Billie Eilish

Billie is all about the mysterious and suspenseful vibes. From the soft and touching vocals to the insane beats, her discography is perfect for contemporary dance. There is plenty of room in her lyrics and production to get creative and throw in some dramatic floorwork or fun tricks. Her songs will challenge you to use all of your emotions and make your dancing raw and vulnerable.

Sabrina Carpenter

If we are being honest here, Sabrina brings all the drama (in the best way possible) which makes her perfect for musical theater performances. Her flirty and upbeat hits such as “Feather” and “Juno” would make for the best dramatic musical theatre routine. Make sure you don’t forget her iconic sequins and flirty facial expressions!
