Dancers are known for their endless drive and work ethic. We’re celebrated for pushing through the pain and the bad days. But constantly being in that mindset can very quickly lead to burnout, injuries, or even just losing your passion for dance. And no dancer wants to go through any of those things, which is why rest is important. Sometimes the boldest thing you can do for yourself is to say, “I need a moment.”

Why Stepping Back Takes Strength

It is never easy to admit anything that is going to make you feel or seem weak. It takes a tremendous amount of courage to admit when you are feeling mentally or physically drained. Don’t get this confused with giving up! Knowing your limits is not the same thing as giving up. A break is a tool to use so you can come back better than ever. You are choosing long-term success over the pressure to push through for something short-term.

What Stepping Back Can Look Like

Taking a break can look different for every situation. It could mean sitting out of practice or taking a break from auditions and competitions. There is never anything wrong with sitting out. You are doing what is best for you. It could also mean just not overworking yourself with extra practices. It is also okay to just do what is required.

Growth Happens in the Pause

You might see your best growth during these breaks. You are giving your body and mind the space, time, and ability to heal and grow. Taking some time away can be a great opportunity to recharge your creative battery and leave you feeling more inspired. Remember why you started dancing in the first place and find a way to reconnect with that feeling. When you do return, you will feel refreshed, recharged, and better than ever.
