It is spooky season. That means it’s time to make it official with pumpkins, scary movie nights, and dressing up with your besties (in person or online). It’s one of my favorite times of the year, a holiday where we get to celebrate our creativity and dress up in costumes and style looks with no limits! Whether you get to dress up for dance class at your studio or if you just want a Halloween look you can move in, here is a style guide of a few of my favorite costume ideas for 2020–all made with dancewear, of course.

Elsa

Be as fierce as a queen this Halloween. The best way to enjoy a chilly October evening of candy and dance is to channel the Queen of Arendelle!

To achieve the snow queen look you will need to find all your icy blue dancewear. I paired my blue velvet “Soho” leotard (perfect for the winter magic aesthetic) with my rehearsal pancake tutu. I gave the queen some sparkles by adding a silvery highlighter to my face and icicle rhinestones! If you’re wearing this look to ballet like I did, pair it with tights and pointe shoes. If not, you can totally alter this look for any style of dance by simply adding the proper shoes and accessories. (Imagine Elsa in kicks for hip hop or some icy tap shoes!) Don’t forget your classic Elsa side braid and crown!

Elsa is an independent thinker, ready to use her power to change the world and work on her own self-love. This Elsa costume can also be fun as a group costume with your dance besties, too. Cue Anna, Sven, and Olaf!

“Don’t you know there’s a part of me that wants to go into the unknown?”
– Elsa, Frozen II

Audrey Hepburn

Processed with VSCO with c6 preset

Grab your breakfast, head over to Tiffany’s, and remember “Paris is always a good idea!” This British actress is one of my (and many people’s) major daily fashion inspirations, so recreating her famous Breakfast at Tiffany’s look is a perfect costume choice.

For this danceable Audrey Hepburn costume, I achieved her classic little black dress look (LBD likes its NBD) by pairing the black velvet “Classic Luxe” leotard with a matching black velvet ballet skirt. Black dancewear is a staple piece in every dancewear closet, so you’ve probably got this covered. I added Audrey’s iconic black gloves, sunglasses, and vintage pearls (thanks, Mom!) to match Audrey’s ensemble. You can also try out a French twist for your hair and do not forget your tiara!

As Audrey says, “Elegance is the only beauty that never fades!” Shine in style from the city streets to the ballet barre.

“Nothing is impossible, the word itself says “I’m Possible”!”

Fairy Costume

It’s time to fly! Grab your fairy wings and let’s hit those grand jetés. This fairy costume is pretty simple but so magical!

Start by finding a floral printed or floral toned leotard in your dancewear collection. For this look, I used the Royal Couture “Nolita” velvet leotard in Flower Bomb paired with a green velvet skirt. Hair and makeup set this look apart and make the magic come to life. Have fun with it and get creative! The more whimsical the better. I added lots of highlighter to my face (you can never have too many sparkles) and butterfly clips and flowers in my hair to give off a woodland vibe.

This look definitely has “I just flew into dance class from the forest” vibes, but you can change up your aesthetic to create different kinds of fairies for different places. It’s time to take flight, leap higher, pirouette, and sprinkle a little pixie dust along the way.

“All you need is faith, trust, and a little pixie dust!”
