Performing is a fun and exciting experience, and your makeup plays a big role in your experience and presentation. It has to be bold enough to highlight your features on stage and strong enough to withstand sweat, tears, and more. These tips and techniques will keep your makeup fresh and long-lasting this season.
Prep your skin (aka “The Base”)
Making sure your skin is clean is an essential part of a good makeup routine. Wash, cleanse, and dry your face before applying makeup. This includes making sure you’re not layering new makeup over layers of old makeup. (This might seem faster, but if you’re doing more than a touch-up, you need to start fresh.)
Next, moisturize your skin. This gives your face a more even surface and helps your makeup look more lively! Applying a primer can also help to ensure your makeup goes on smoothly and help it last longer. For dance, find a primer that controls oil to prevent sweat from damaging your look.
Foundation and Concealer
Make sure to choose a foundation and concealer that match your skin tone and decide if you want a matte or glossy look. Then apply it to your skin using either a brush or a beauty blender. Beauty blenders are great for adding a more skin-like texture. Brushes are good for getting a more full-coverage look. Make sure to blend evenly into your neck to avoid harsh spots or lines. Then you can lock your foundation in place with setting powder. A translucent powder typically works best for this as it helps to minimize reflection from the stage lights.
Don’t Forget the Eyes!
Eye makeup is one of the most crucial parts of stage makeup. Don’t be afraid to go bold for this step. Use darker colors, more glitter, and more eyeshadow than you might for an everyday eye look. Choose colors that match your costume and compliment the mood of the performance. Eyeliner can add more detail to your face. However, try to use a waterproof one so it stays on throughout the whole performance. Don’t forget the mascara! You can also use fake eyelashes if you want to have a more bold eye look that is visible to the whole audience.
Lock Your Look in Place
After you put all that work into your makeup, you want to make sure it lasts the whole day. This is where your setting powder and spray come in. Apply setting powder then setting spray onto your entire face. This will make sure everything stays sweat-proof, in place, and looking fabulous.
