Being introverted in the dance world can be intimidating. Competitions and classes both require time in the spotlight. While it might seem like extroverted dancers have an easier time interacting with others and feeling confident, introverted dancers have their own skills that benefit them on the dance floor. To be successful in dance, don’t try to change your personality. Match your expectations and approach to your skills!

Find Your Stand-Out Skills

Being introverted often means being more in the moment. Introverts focus on the details which makes intricate choreography easier to pick up. Shyness and internal thought power the success of introverts. Take advantage of them on your own and use them to help bring your teammates back down to earth when things feel scattered or overwhelming.

Take Time for Yourself

A busy dance schedule can be mentally and physically exhausting, especially if you need a cooldown period after interacting with large groups. Recognize when it’s time for a break, so you can stay charged for dance. After a long day, spend time doing things that help you wind down like napping, reading, or watching your favorite show. That alone time allows you to be yourself when you’re surrounded by other people later.

Focus on Your Achievements

Introverts often feel like they don’t belong in the spotlight or that they don’t shine as brightly as their peers, In reality, you have so much to offer! Going on stage and delivering an incredible performance is possible regardless of your personality. Every dancer’s journey is different, and realizing that makes it easier to focus on your own goals and achievements. Be proud of yourself for everything you have done!

Have a Close Circle

A support system makes a big difference! Surround yourself with people who understand and respect your needs. Having honest conversations with your teammates and teachers allows them to support you if you need space or have to adapt your dance education to your specific needs.
