It can be hard to make a new space feel like home—whether it be your college dorm room or just a new bedroom. Your room should feel fun, comfortable, cozy, and most importantly, like YOU. This is where the decorations and aesthetics come in. This is our guide to transforming your new space into somewhere you’ll love spending time.

Personalize it

One of the best ways to make a space your own is to fill it with reminders of your life and interests. Pictures are a great and affordable option. Print out pictures of you and your friends, family, pets, places you love, and anything else that will make you smile when you look at it. There are so many different ways you can display pictures throughout your room. Create a collage wall, hang a corkboard or picture frames, or randomly scatter them throughout the room with thumbtacks or tape. Having familiar faces and things around your room is a great step to making it feel more like home.

Make It Cozy

What’s better than coming back to a comfy and cozy room? Throw blankets, pillows, and plushies make a room feel full and inviting. Matching those details with a comfy bed to return to every night can make all the difference. So, pick blankets and pillows that are comfortable and soft. Add a rug by your bed for extra comfort on early mornings. If you plan to have late-night study sessions or movie nights with friends, add seating with a bean bag or two for your floor.

All about the lighting

The lighting in your space makes a huge difference. Chances are, your room has lights on the ceiling. Overhead lighting can be harsh and non-adjustable. Take control of the mood in your room! LED lights work if you like bright and colorful lights, or create comfy and chill vibes with string lights. Go shopping (or thrifting) for the perfect lamp! Lighting comes in so many different colors and sizes. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Another great option is neon signs or other light-up objects you could place around your room.

Incorporating YOU

Don’t forget to add little touches of yourself into the space. Display your medals or trophies if you play a sport. If your hobbies involve music, display your instrument or your sheet music. Add your hobbies and passions to your room! Nothing makes a space more comfortable than surrounding yourself with things you love.
