Good things come in threes, and sister act Triple Charm is no exception to the rule. A girl group that uses their love of music and dance to connect with their fans and explore their own identities, Amalia, Raena, and Gabriella are taking music and dance from social media to the stage to filming locations around the world! We talked to Triple Charm about their latest single and music video “No Problema” and how bringing this bilingual anthem to life was as much about upbeat, summer vibes as exploring their heritage and family history.

Showstopper Magazine Online: Hi, Triple Charm! Catch us up on all things music and sisterhood. How has your year in music been so far?

Triple Charm: This past year has been the busiest yet most exciting year for us! We’ve released two singles this year so far. “Tough Boy,” which went viral on social media and now has over 120,000 YouTube Shorts to it! And “No Problema,” which has definitely been the most unique music video and recording process for us! We also had our first-ever live show this past May, which sold out! Performing our original music on stage for the first time was truly unforgettable and we can’t wait to get back on stage!

SMO: You just released your song “No Problema.” How does it feel to have it out in the world?

Triple Charm: We are so happy that “No Problema” is finally out in the world! We wrote the song a few weeks before our live show in May and got to perform it then! Our fans were super excited about it and since then we’ve been ready to release it. After the live show, we recorded the vocals in our home studio! This was the first time we recorded a single at home which was so much fun! Filming the music video in Puerto Rico had us even more hyped and eager to release this song. We are so proud of it and so happy to see that everyone’s been loving it!

SMO: This isn’t your first bilingual single. What does it mean to you to make sure that Spanish is a part of your music?

Triple Charm: Incorporating Spanish into our music has been something we’ve always wanted to do. We are 50% Puerto Rican and have wanted to connect with our heritage on an even deeper level. We didn’t grow up speaking Spanish like a lot of other 3rd generation Hispanics. This has a lot to do with the culture and way our parents grew up. It always felt like a part of our connection to our heritage was missing and through creating music, we’ve been able to learn more Spanish and more about our own history. Writing in Spanish and releasing bilingual music has brought us even closer to our roots which has been such a cool experience.

SMO: What was your goal with “No Problema”? Do you have a favorite line from the song?

Triple Charm: When we first started writing “No Problema” the idea we had was to capture the feeling of when you daydream. It’s the place you go to escape all your worries and whatever else may be going on in life. We want everyone to be able to go to their own paradise when they hear “No Problema.” It has a very dreamy, tropical vibe in the verses and bridge, but also has some super upbeat and driven elements in the chorus because our paradise is a party. Throughout our lives, dance has been an escape for us so that was also something we wanted to incorporate into the lyrics. One lyric that we think really captures the whole meaning of the song is “Mi mundo es fantasía, te veo por ahi” which means “my world is a fantasy, I’ll see you there.” This line in the first verse sort of sets up the rest of the song and invites you into this paradise we’ve created with “No Problema.”

SMO: You filmed your “No Problema” music video in La Isla del Encanto, Puerto Rico. Why that location? Can you tell us about some of the places you shot at?

Triple Charm: Anytime we’re writing a new single, the concept for a music video comes to us right away. As we’re writing the lyrics, all three of us can envision an idea for the music video. That’s exactly what happened when we were writing “No Problema.” Our grandparents grew up in Puerto Rico and we have always wanted to visit. This was the perfect reason to go! Our single is all about paradise and there is no better place than La Isla del Encanto or The Island of Enchantment to bring that to life. It truly was the most magical place we’ve ever seen. We got to shoot in Old San Juan where our abuelo was raised, which was super special. We also shot at Gozalandia Falls in San Sebastian which is on the western side of the island. We went through the countryside while visiting the falls which is where our abuela is from. Additionally, we got the opportunity to shoot in La Perla and work with a guide from the community. The people were amazing and overall shooting the music video was an unforgettable experience.

SMO: You are, of course, dancing in the video! Who choreographed your moves? What was the mood you were trying to capture?

Amalia: Dance is such a big part of everything we do, and we love incorporating dance into all of our music videos. I choreographed the music video for “No Problema.” I have actually done the choreography for every one of our videos for the past two years! Specifically for this song, I went into the choreography thinking about the trend we wanted to create on social media. I first started with that idea and created everything else around it. I was inspired by the reggaeton feel in the song. I wanted to create something a little bit edgy and mature while still fun and easy to recreate. Before the chorus we say “drop your shades” so we obviously had to use sunglasses in the music video and dance, which was super different and fun to come up with. When choreographing I base a lot off of our lyrics and try to create unique shapes that reflect the words. Choreographing pushes me creatively in so many ways and it’s one of my favorite parts of the music video process!

SMO: Can you tell us about your background dancers? Who are they? How did those bigger dance scenes come together?

Triple Charm: Working with dancers on this project was so cool! Since we shot the music video in Puerto Rico, all the dancers we got to work with are from the island. Because we were traveling to Puerto Rico to film the music video, we didn’t have time to set up a rehearsal before the shoot like we normally would. Instead, we sent the dancers video tutorials for the dance and they learned the choreography through those. On the day we shot with the dancers, we met with them for around an hour before we started rolling. In that hour, we went over all the choreo and created formations. When filming at certain locations, we had to adapt to the space and change things on the fly but they were so amazing to work with and were absolute pros!

SMO: What are your favorite behind-the-scenes moments from filming the music video?

Triple Charm: There were so many fun moments while filming the music video, it’s impossible to narrow it down. One of the locations in the music video is this beautiful waterfall. We shot there the first day we got to Puerto Rico and woke up at 4 am to get there. Our dad was behind the camera and it was just some fun family bonding time. None of us had really been to a waterfall before, it was so surreal and looked like it was straight out of a movie. We shot there for a few hours and had the best time. The rocks were quite slippery which made for some funny bloopers! Another favorite moment was when we were shooting in La Perla. It is a very close-knit community and we were so honored to be able to shoot there. We filmed at this little outdoor library and all the kids in the community came to watch us dance. It was such a special and sweet moment.

SMO: You’re always dancing and singing on social media as well. What are some things you’re excited about for the rest of the year?

Triple Charm: We are super excited for all that we have planned for the rest of this year and the beginning of 2024! We have been writing some new music and we may be releasing another song this year…so stay tuned for that! You can definitely expect content on social media of course and some new long form videos. Our audience has been asking for more long-form YouTube videos, so we have a very fun series we’ll be releasing soon! The rest of this year we are really focused on preparing for our two live shows we have coming up in January! We’ll be performing in LA at the Roxy on January 20 and in NYC at the Gramercy Theatre, January 27. We have so many exciting things in store for those shows, you definitely won’t wanna miss it!

SMO: Is there anything else you want people to know about you or your work right now?

Triple Charm: We would love to take a second to just say how much we appreciate every single one of our fans and followers! We are truly grateful for everyone who is on this journey with us and your support has changed our lives in the most amazing ways! Our dreams are coming true because of each and every one of you! We love you all and please remember that you’re amazing! We are super excited for all the things we have coming up in the next year and can’t wait for you all to see what’s next!
