The Public Theater

Shakespeare is coming back to parks this summer, but you don’t have to wait months to experience your favorite plays. The podcast play Romeo y Julieta premieres today!

Directed by Saheem Ali, in collaboration with playwright Ricardo Pérez González, Romeo y Julieta is adapted from Alfredo Michel Modenessi’s Spanish translation of Shakespeare’s beloved tragedy Romeo and Juliet. Starring Lupita Nyong’o and Juan Castano as the iconic couple, this free bilingual audio play premieres via The Public Theater.

Romeo y Julieta will premiere via a live listening part on its opening night, Thursday, March 18 at 7pm ET. The event will feature a Q&A with the play’s stars and live music! Basically, it’s the perfect Thursday night theater nerd party and must-attend event.

Romeo y Julieta

If you can’t attend the live event, don’t worry. Romeo y Julieta is sticking around for a while. The play will be available on-demand for a whole year. That means you have until March 18, 2022 to listen to Lupita and Juan play out their brief and tragic love affair alongside Carlo Albán (Benvolio), Sarah Nina Hayon (Lady Montague), Ivonne Coll (Nurse), Javier Muñoz (Paris), and more! To enhance the experience and make it more accessible, the full production transcript with English and Spanish captions will also be available alongside the audio play.

It looks like we’re going to have a lot of options when it comes to Shakespeare experiences this year. We’re excited to kick things off with this one.
