Have you seen The Next Step? A perfect show for dancers of any age, The Next Step has a mix of dance, drama, romance, and more. It’s great to find dance shows that are representative of the experiences of competition dancers from studio time to those incredible moments on stage. These are some of our favorite things that The Next Step just gets right about dance.

Seeing Other Dancers Struggle and Gain New Skills

Dancers are constantly making mistakes, learning, and gaining new skills. Sometimes that can make you feel defeated and not want to keep trying anymore. Throughout The Next Step, there are multiple cases of dancers learning new tricks such as aerials that capture this process. They get scared and struggle, but they always get back and try again until they get it. Sometimes, seeing someone else go through what you are going through can help you get the motivation you need!

Making friends in a new studio

If you’ve ever joined a new studio, team, or class you know it can be intimidating to make friends. Like any show, The Next Step has introduced a lot of new characters over the course of eight seasons. They are constantly coming to the studio and trying to make new friends. It is so normal to feel anxious when you are around new people. The dancers on the show capture the ways it can take some time to truly feel comfortable being yourself around your peers.

Learning a new dance style

Along with learning new skills or tricks, sometimes you might have to learn a new dance style outside of your usual comfort zone. It can be easy to feel discouraged when trying something completely new that you aren’t used to. But with time, just like the characters in the show, you will get better and maybe have even found your new favorite style.

Comparison

Unfortunately, comparison and body image are something pretty much all dancers deal with. While it is really difficult, it can make it easier knowing you’re not the only one who feels that way. Whether it’s your height, weight, figure, or a skill you have to work just a little bit harder on to master, somebody else has dealt with the same thing and gotten past it. You can too!
