Dance is a great outlet for any negative emotions, stress, or overwhelming feelings you might experience. It is one of our oldest forms of art, exercise, and expression, and whether you’re after a career in dance or the studio is more extracurricular, its versatility makes it a great tool for maintaining your mental health. As we experiment with different genres, choreography, freestyling, and music, dance can offer so many benefits.

Manage Anxiety and Depression

It is normal to feel anxious or down sometimes, and dance is a great way to help ease those feelings. It allows you to use your creativity and just let loose for a bit to have fun. Dance helps your body release endorphins which help ease stress, reduce pain, and help you feel happier. And since music typically helps to improve moods, mixing dance and music together is a great first step to at least a small smile when things are difficult.

Build Your Social Circle

Dance is also a wonderful place to build a community and, better yet, a community filled with like-minded people who share at least one common interest. This makes finding new friends easier. Socializing and talking with people throughout your week is a simple boost. Your dance friends are also people you can learn new things, laugh, and share stories with. Plus, you never know how much of an impact everyone in your studio can have on your life from teachers to fellow students.

Improves self-esteem

Feel more confident inside and out! By allowing yourself to step out of your comfort zone and try new things, dance can make you feel more comfortable in your own skin. There is also no better feeling than locking in a new skill or mastering a routine. The studio also comes with a built-in support system, and it can be comforting to see others go through the trial and error that comes along with dance. Remind yourself that it’s normal to face hurdles and that you can overcome them!
