The 2025 Met Gala is officially over which means it’s time to evaluate everyone’s looks. While we have a lot of opinions about who wore it best and what looks were a bit boring, understanding the theme is what the Met Gala is all about. This year, the Met Gala is a celebration of the exhibit Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, a walk through fashion from the 18th century to today. The exhibition focuses on understanding the evolution of Black fashion and how it reflects wealth, race, and class across the last 300 years. Understanding Black dandyism and men’s fashion were essential to planning a look for the theme.
Many celebrities showed up in lapels, pinstripes, and sharp-angled tailored looks, but a handful leaned further into the you in the “Tailored for You” theme. These looks prioritized referencing the wearers’ personalities and careers. Historically, dandies rebelled against the fashion choices of their time. Their looks stood out because they subverted expectations and challenged what it meant to be fashionable. As a result, these blue carpet looks challenge what we expect of a Met Gala look.
Chappell Roan
Chappell Roan often channels vintage aesthetics, and for her first Met Gala appearance, she went for a disco look that featured hot pink, sequins, tinsel, and overall glam. Taking the Pink Pony Club to the disco era with a Pat McGrath makeup look, Chappell adopted the two-piece suit look that was a favorite of the evening, but her pants featured a split bell bottom as well as a matching glitzy vest and coat. She worked with Wicked costume designer Paul Tazewell.
Vogue revealed that the duo sourced this look from eBay. How much alteration was made and the details of the look beyond that appear to be a mystery.
Venus Williams
Ready to hit the court? Venus Williams arrived at the Met Gala in the most formal tennis set you’ve ever seen. Her look, created by Creative Director for Lacoste Pelagia Kolotouros, combined the elegance of a long gown and coat with the sportiness of a pleated mini skirt and polo shirt. With added jewels on both the polo and in Venus’ hair and matching platform heels, this look was nothing if not tailored to this tennis star.
Sabrina Carpenter
Sabrina Carpenter is no stranger to a body suit, so her tailored Louis Vuitton look was an easy stage-ready stunner for her third time on the Met Gala carpet. Her look was styled by Pharell Williams, and while the espresso-colored fit was a simple ensemble, her heels and coat tails were anything but short and sweet!
Olivier Rousteing
Olivier Rousteing walked the blue carpet with Rosalía. Their looks reflected the relationship between the designer and the mannequin. Olivier is one of the youngest and first Black designers to lead a French house, so seeing him on the carpet with brass-plated Balmain sewing machine captures many layers of this year’s theme. His perspective on fashion and design and his participation in the industry are all reflected in this look!
Simone Biles
As one of this year’s Met Gala Committe Chairs, Simone Biles was obligated to stun. She arrived on the blue carpet with her husband Jonathan Owens in an electric blue “Seraphim” mini dress from Harbison Studio. The look was completed with the designer’s Galaxy Cathedral Train in matching blue, and we could see her shedding the train and heels to perform a dynamic routine on the carpet.
Andre 3000
You’ve never seen an album announcement like this. Andre 3000 attended the Met Gala with his heart on his sleeve and a piano on his back. Andre 3000 collaborated with Burbery and Daniel Lee to assemble his look. Using the styles of Burbery and Andre 3000’s own brand Benji Bixby, they created an adventure-ready cotton jumpsuit, a nod to both brand’s pasts. They completed the look with the piano and the 7 Piano Sketches EP announcement.
