We can all relate to that feeling when rehearsal seems like it is just going on for too long, nothing seems to be going right, and you are starting to feel exhausted. This can lead to a lot of pent-up frustration. That frustration manifests as snapping at your teammates, not wanting to take corrections, or just feeling as though you need to cry. This can be called rehearsal rage. This feeling is normal and is something that every dancer will experience at one point or another.

What Leads to Getting Frustrated in Rehearsal?

Focusing Too Much on Being Perfect

It is normal to want every move, turn, and leap to be perfect. It is almost like your brain is programmed to want your dancing to be flawless. However, we are all human, meaning things can’t always go how we want them to. When things start to feel out of control it is easy to start to go into a negative spiral. This can lead you to focus on just the negatives instead of all of the positives.

Fix It: Shift your mindset! Instead of saying, “I can’t get this right,” try: “I’m improving every time I keep doing this.”

Your Body Needs a Break

Dance is demanding of your body. It requires good sleep, nutrition, and healthy muscles. If you are lacking in any of these areas, it can feel almost impossible for your body to be able to keep up. Your brain might know what to do, but your body will feel so exhausted that it just can’t.

Fix It: Make sure to stay rested, hydrated, and fueled. If you are annoyed, check in with yourself, and see if you are tired. Taking care of your body will help your patience last longer throughout the day.

Rehearsal Feels Never-Ending

Sometimes those days when you have a longer rehearsal test your patience. They can seem like they are never going to end. If you are feeling a bit foggy mentally, it is easier to mess up more, which leads to more frustration.

Fix It: Take a deep breath and set small and achievable goals. Instead of thinking how much you don’t want to do another run-through, focus on one thing to improve each time. Small wins keep you motivated and on track!

How to Keep That Positive Mindset

Take a Breather for a Minute

Step away for a second, take deep breaths, and reset. A break might be just what you need to collect yourself.

Laugh it Off

Sometimes, you need to shake it out and not take things so seriously. Dance is supposed to be fun and a creative outlet!

Remember Why You Dance

On hard days, remind yourself of why you love to dance. That love can conquer any bad day you are having in rehearsal.
