It’s that time of year, the season for dressing up in costume!

As a dancer, costumes are part of the stories we tell with our dances. On Halloween, we get to dress up to tell a different story. Literature professor M. Cooley says, “Clothes make a statement. Costumes tell a story.” The story you tell during spooky season is up to you. Whether you’re off to a fun party with friends, trick-or-treating on Halloween, or even dressing up at your dance studio, choose a costume you love. Fashion gives us the space to express ourselves through what we wear. This is why many, including me, find their love of fashion. You can be whoever you want to be!

If you can dress up for class at your dance studio, or if you want a totally danceable Halloween look, we’re diving into inspiration straight from your dancewear closet. Channel your creativity and imagination!

Dancing Butterfly

Leap, jump, and glide across the dance floor! Take flight in this fun Halloween look. This costume is perfect for the dance studio and dancers of all ages. Putting this butterfly costume together is simple and fun. Pair your favorite black leotard with a pair of black tights. Layer on butterfly wings of any color. I chose a pair of orange-colored wings in the style of a monarch butterfly! Bright and vibrant!

Add fun accessories you love in colors that match your butterfly style. I added a couple of clips to my ballet hairstyle to match the color of my wings. I put on butterfly earrings and a butterfly-shaped gold necklace to complete the outfit. Ready to soar!

Fairy Godmother

Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo! We are recreating Fairy Godmother’s look from Disney’s Cinderella (1950). Fairy Godmother is caring, kind, helpful, and a fashion hero! In the Disney classic, Fairy Godmother transforms Cinderella’s torn and ragged clothes in a gorgeous gown complete with glass slippers, just in time for the ball. This is an iconic moment in Disney history!

Fairy Godmother knows her fashion! This look is blue with a pop of pink. To create this dazzling dance costume, pair a blue leotard with pink tights. To give the look a fair effect, layer a blue robe dress with a pink bow to tie it together. Fairy Godmother is magical. I put some sparkle in my hair with a glam jeweled headpiece. Shine and glow!

Coco Chanel

A legend. An icon. Coco Chanel is one of the most well-known designers to grace the fashion industry with a legacy that still lives on. An unmatched luxury designer, she changed fashion history and has been an inspiration to me when in fashion and design. British Vogue says, “A Chanel tweed jacket is perhaps the most coveted fashion item in the world.” To put together this fabulous Coco look, you need some tweed pieces!

Tweed is a woolen fabric with a rough, unfinished look. British Vogue explains Coco Chanel’s use of the fabric for her iconic designs. “Chanel’s unique take on the fabric was to feminize it, to bring it to an entirely new dimension of color, richness, and softness that was in line with her masculine-meets-feminine aesthetic.” The fabric is key to taking your costume to the next level and making it authentically Coco Chanel. You can find tweed jackets inspired by Coco Chanel on Amazon, Target, Etsy, and sometimes even at your local thrift store.

I layered a pink tweed top and skirt set over a pink leotard and tights. This classy and fabulous look pairs perfectly with a French twist and classic gold jewelry. Coco Chanel said, “Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself.” Own your style and shine!
