Making its way to theaters in just a few short weeks, YA hit The Sun is Also a Star (based on a novel by the same name) is an adventure through New York City that you’re not going to want to miss. In it, we follow Natasha (Yara Shahidi) and Daniel (Charles Melton) as they struggle with their identities and their futures (Natasha and her family are facing deportation to Jamaica and Daniel is hoping to get into college) and Daniel tries to convince Natasha that love is real.

Playing Young Natasha in the movie, Anais Lee gave us an inside look at how her character sets Natasha up to become the character we love to watch fall in love in the movie. Anais says that her character supports the main character played by Yara Shadidi because it is Young Natasha that gives us access to their relationship with the father character. “As Natasha got older, her relationship with her father deteriorated and Natasha blames her father for her family being deported,” Anais said. It’s this relationship that is really the backbone for Natasha’s beliefs about love and relationships.

“When I portrayed young Natasha, I felt like I was playing myself.”

It’s actually moments filming with Natasha’s father, played by Gbenga Akinnagbe, that were some of Anais’ favorites. “We filmed a scene on a New York City rooftop and we were running around playing hide and seek,” Anais said describing her most memorable scene. “It was so much fun.”

A lot of the hype for this movie comes for a love of the book it is based on. Written by Nicola Yoon, the book contains 355 pages of New York City adventure. Anais wasn’t immune to the book any more than most teen readers. “I read the book as soon as I received the audition and I loved it!” she said. (This is exactly what Charles Melton did as soon as he received the script, too.)

Anais shared that the movie captures the Yoon’s novel really well. “Sometimes, when a book is made into a movie, the movie doesn’t end up like the book,” Anais said. “The Sun is Also a Star, however, is a lot like the book!” She’s confident that both are amazing. That’s not the only reason Anais labels the film a must-see, though. “I think people will love this story because the movie is filled with drama, love, and comedy,” she said. “I think people will enjoy the magic of the film. The movie is a beautiful love story, and viewers should enjoy every moment of it.”

The Sun is Also a Star premieres on Friday, May 17, 2019. But Anais is already on to her next project. The young actress and her twin sister, Mirabelle, are currently working on an exciting new project with Executive Producer Irene Dreayer (Suite Life of Zack and Cody, Sister Sister). She couldn’t tell us what it is, but we can only hope we’ll be seeing Anais and Mirabelle in something exciting very soon.
