Creating choreography is a fun and challenging part of being a dancer. Finding inspiration to help you figure out the vibe you are going for, whether you’re creating a solo, group dance, or a trio, will help you feel motivated and ready to get to work. If you are blanking on how to start, don’t sweat it! Here are some ways to get your creativity flowing so you can start choreographing your next incredible dance.

It’s All About the Music

Music sets the tone for the type of dance you choreograph and the direction you take it. It doesn’t hurt to take some time to find some new types of music. Explore genres that you wouldn’t typically listen to. Music from different eras, new artists, or even your friends’ playlists can expose you to new emotions and rhythms to move to.

Remember choreography doesn’t have to be based solely on lyrics or melodies. Instrumentals, poetry, and rhythm are just a few layers you might explore. Sparks your creativity outside your comfort zone. A good way to do this is by closing your eyes so that you can try to visualize how some movements would work with the music.

Watch other Dancers

One of the best ways to learn or get inspired is by watching people who share your passion. Consuming the medium you want to work in a great way to get in a mindset to create. Watch your favorite professional dancers on TV shows or their personal social media platforms. Look at how they use the space around them, how their movements flow, where they are sharp, and the different emotions they project.

Experiment

Sometimes the best way to start creating is to get up and move. Put on a song you like, hit record on your phone, and feel out the different parts of the song. Try not to think too much about what you are doing or if it is good. After dancing for a bit, watch the video that you recorded and see if anything stands out to you. This “draft” of choreography will likely be full of fragments that inspire the final routine.

Work with Others

Collaboration is a great space for creating. Grab a friend or teammate or even someone who hasn’t even danced before! Playing around and see what interests you about a few songs, what they mean, and how they make you want to move. You may be surprised by what you can come up with.
