It’s official. After almost a year with few updates on mischief, yellow brick roads, and flying monkeys, we have Wicked movie news!

Last spring, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were officially cast as Elphaba and Glinda, and director Jon M. Chu announced that Wicked would be coming to theaters as not one, but two movies. This came as quite a surprise as after the film had already seen two release date moves since it was teased that a film adaptation of the Broadway classic was in the works.

Other members of the star-studded cast include Jeff Goldblum was also confirmed as part of the cast and will be playing the Wizard. Oscar-winning Best Actress Michelle Yeoh will take on the role of Madame Morrible. So far, the rest of the cast is rounded out by Bowen Yang (Pfannee), Marissa Bode (Nessarose), Bronwyn James (ShenShen), Keala Settle (Miss Coddle), Aaron Teoh (Avaric), Colin Michael Carmichael (Nikidik), Ethan Slater (Boq), Jonathan Bailey (Prince Fiyero).

Now, we have more news, and it is a date change, but Wicked is actually closer than we think. Jon M. Chu tweeted this week that Wicked has a new release date. “WICKED NEWS” the director wrote. “We’ve decided to get it to you a little earlier than planned.”

The new date isn’t a huge jump from the originally planned release—the original announcement stated that the movies would come out on successive Christmases starting in 2024—but we are still celebrating being a month close to Wicked. The first part of the film duo is now set to come out on November 27, 2023. “A little Thanksgiving treat!”

Is that the sparkle of the Yellow Brick Road in our eyes? We’re counting down the days to Wicked, and we’re hoping for many more updates until then. As the Wicked Instagram account said in their announcement of the date, “Oz is one month closer.”
