Stephen Sondheim is the artistic genius behind the music and lyrics of many of our favorite Broadway shows and their film adaptations. On March 22, 2020, Stephen turns 90 years old! While we’d all love to sit down with him to share a slice of birthday cake and talk about our favorite songs from West Side Story, we’ll have to settle for enjoying his creations. You can look to platforms like BroadwayHD and even major streaming services like Amazon and iTunes to stream recordings of live productions, but lucky for us, even more musical movies are available for us to watch.

West Side Story (1961)

The original production of West Side Story hit the stage in 1957, but not long after, it was adapted to the screen. You’ll want to watch this before the 2020 film (also featuring Stephen Sondheim’s contributions) makes its way to theaters.

Watch it on YouTube, Amazon Prime, iTunes, and Hulu.

Sweeney Todd (2007)

If you love musical thrillers, Sweeney Todd is the perfect film to celebrate with!

Watch it on YouTube, Amazon Prime, iTunes, and Netflix.

Into the Woods (2014)

Don’t worry. It’s not all drama and terrifying barbers. The film adaptation of Into the Woods is perfect for anyone that loves fantasy. Just watch out for the big bad wolf!

Watch it on YouTube, Amazon Prime, and iTunes.

Six by Sondheim (2013)

This HBO documentary takes six of Stephen Sondheim’s classic songs performed by Stephen himself and Audra McDonald, Jeremy Jordan, Darren Criss, America Ferrera, Jackie Hoffman, and Laura Osnes in original short films and new recordings.

Watch it on YouTube, Amazon Prime, iTunes, and HBO Now.

Bonus: The Simpsons

The cameo cast of “Yokel Chords,” Stephen Sondheim is second from the right.

This isn’t a movie or a musical, but if you want to Stephen cameo as himself, he is a featured guest on “Yokel Chords,” Season 18 Episode 14 of The Simpsons.

Watch it on YouTube and Amazon Prime.
