It’s February 2nd, and that means while you were snoozing or getting ready for an early morning dance class, people were gathering in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to see if Punxsutawney Phil would see his shadow. This morning at 7:25 am (EST), Phil emerged from his hole and saw his shadow. According to tradition, that means six more weeks of winter are officially on the way.

Punxsutawney Phil might get the last word on the upcoming forecast every February, but he has been wrong before. His handlers, however, say that Phil is always right, but his predictions only mean that winter is going to last for six more weeks somewhere. We’ll just have to hope that somewhere is Antartica so we can start wearing some fabulous spring outfits.

Here’s something you probably didn’t know! According to Punxsutawney Phil’s inner circle (the group of men in top hats that gather around Phil each year) say that Phil is the same groundhog that began predicting the weather 132 years ago in 1887. Apparently the give him “groundhog punch” every year to keep him going.

Whether or not you believe in immortality or weather forecasts given by groundhogs, we just hope we’ll all be surprised by a quick return to warmer weather.
