The Nanny Musical Broadway Bound!

A post shared by Fran Drescher (@officialfrandrescher) on

The Nanny is joining the list of modern cult classics (like Mean Girls, Frozen, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Beetlejuice) that are thrilling musical theater fans by becoming Broadway musicals.

The 90s CBS sitcom tells the story of fashionista Fran Fine who, after getting dumped by her boyfriend and fired from her job, becomes the hilarious nanny for British Broadway producer Maxwell Sheffield’s three children. The masterminds behind the show were Fran Drescher (who also stars as the lead) and her husband Peter Marc Jacobson who based it partly on Fran Drescher’s life as a young Jewish woman in Queens, New York.

As the nanny makes her way to Broadway, Fran Drescher won’t be taking on the role of her alter ego on stage. She and Jacobson are working with producers Brian Zeilinger and Scott Zeillinger (The Elephant Man, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof), director Marc Bruni (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical on Broadway) and writer Rachel Bloom (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) to bring Fran Fine from the screen to the stage.

Who will be taking the role of Fran Fine? In an interview with Broadway World, Fran said, “Nobody is cast yet – we’re plotting – but we feel confident we will find a fabulous actress who is funny, charming and has a great voice.” She also joked that she would reprise her role (she is still acting and is currently starring in the NBC show Indebted), but, “we’d have to change the title to The Granny.”

With a Broadway musical in the works, the long-awaited TV reboot of The Nanny has been put on hold. Fran told Deadline, “[The Broadway musical] is the next big Nanny thing.” We’ll have to wait for cast announcements and preview dates, so, for now, we’ll have to spend our time binge-watching The Nanny‘s original six seasons and trying to guess what might make it into the musical.
