Katie Murphy is a 14-year-old dancer from Warwick, Rhode Island. She dances at Defying Gravity School of Dance.

“Bringing joy to communities through dance is important to me.”

How does dance have a positive impact on your life?

“Dance has had a positive impact on my life because it allows me to express my feelings. This year I lost a friend to cancer. I’m dedicating my solo to her because it allows me to feel close to her. My dance community serves as a second home to me. Dancing has not only helped me create numerous friendships but also taught me independence and has given me confidence. Dancing allows me to travel, take classes from diverse teachers, and meet friends from other states.

How do you want to use dance to make a positive influence on your community?

“I would want to use dance as a positive influence in my community because it has so many benefits of building strong work ethics, art expression, and joy. Teaching younger dancers allows me to pass along these traits. Bringing joy to communities through dance is important to me. I have performed at galas and fundraisers to help their causes. I hope to continue to spread my love of dance to many communities.
